The eleventh in a series of chapter reviews of the book, Lost in Trans Nation: A Child Psychiatrist’s Guide Out of the Madness  by Dr. Miriam Grossman, reviewed by CPL Board Member Barb Anderson and edited by Mindi Fasold.
As Dr. Grossman penned Chapter Eleven, 45,375 girls were seeking donations on GoFundMe to pay for “top surgery”. Between 2016 and 2019, JAMA Pediatrics reported a 389 percent increase in this surgical procedure.
According to Grossman, “top surgery” is a misleading euphemism. She explains, “. . . what they’re talking about is breast amputation, a bilateral mastectomy. Why the vague, bland language? To normalize the atrocity. Nothing to see, here folks, just an eighth grader having her healthy breasts sliced off. Just ‘top surgery.’” Gender-affirming care (GAC) activists claim that mastectomies for dysphoric minors are “crucial” and “medically necessary”. They reference studies like the 2019 study out of Sweden which found that individuals having sex reassignment surgeries experienced decreases in mental health care visits for mood and anxiety disorders, prescriptions for antidepressants and anxiolytics, and hospitalizations following suicide attempts over time. The study was widely referenced to support the narrative that gender-affirming surgeries are beneficial for people with gender dysphoria.  please continue reading below :
