MN Assoc of Townships (MAT) – IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  a. MAT was allowed the formation and direct payments from MN Townships by the MN Legislature.

  b. MAT in its current form dates from the early 1980’s but has roots back to the 1930’s

  c. MAT is a PRIVATE 501.c3 type organization

  d. MAT is 100% PRIVATE but FUNCTIONS on 99.9% Township taxpayer monies.

  e. MAT is NO LONGER a voice for all MN Townships

  f. MAT has several issues that have popped up over the past few years that have de-legitimized its role and existence to aid MN Twps.

  g. MAT is NOT a government or layer of government, NOR does it have any elected statutory or Constitutional role or rights to govern anyone but itself.

  h. MAT has recently kicked out 4 townships from the organization for asking questions

  i. A simple majority of the MAT 13-member board forced the resignation of one board member and are actively suing that former member based on a defamation claim, while a few bully members of the board and staff continue to defame him, and others around the state to other township officials.

  j. There is a movement amongst Townships to LEAVE the MAT organization and the MAT, IT insurance trust due to current issues in MAT and its bully group

  k. MAT has outlived its usefulness and has been recreating itself as a level of government

  l. MAT hires the mayor of Golden Valley to be its lobbyist to the MN legislature to speak of township issues/wants/needs.    This should not be allowed.

March is the month when all MN townships hold their Annual Meetings, where the RESIDENTS run the meeting (READ THE STATUTES) and can direct the direction of the townships.   In many townships an election also occurs on the March Annual mtg date where at least one supervisor is elected and either a clerk or treasurer.  Some variations exist as the MN legislature has complicated this over the years.   Look it up and participate.

The MN legislature needs to adjust the position of the MN Assoc of Townships to a lower degree of influence as it has become the tail that wags the dog.

Like it or not the MN legislature over the years has made Townships into Eunuchs and statutorily written some of their original powers/duties out of Statute.   Both Republicans and Democrats have been complicit to strike out Township powers, the Constable is a noteworthy one.
